Taiwan’s defense ministry issued a warning on Tuesday saying China had launched a satellite and urging caution days before the island’s election.
Taiwan held presidential and parliamentary elections on Saturday that China described as a choice between war and peace.
In English, the president’s alert was sent to residents’ cellphones warning of a missile flyover.

The warning was issued in the middle of an international press conference by Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Joseph Wu.
He explained it was a satellite launch, told reporters not to worry, and continued with the press conference.
China views Taiwan, located about 100 miles off China’s east coast, as a renegade territory that must come under its control.
